Among the products in the category, Keurig is perhaps the most well-known. The company produces not only the coffee machines, but also the beverage pods – which are aptly named K-Cups. The latest generation is called Keurig 2.0, which introduces K-Mugs and K-Carafes for making larger brew sizes.
Keurig 2.0 coffee machines work exclusively with Keurig 2.0 beverage pods. Keurig K200 and Keurig K250 are two models in the series that are quite affordable, suitable for personal use or for serving just a few people. These coffee machines will allow people to get tasty coffee without much time or effort. The Keurig beverage pods also have a vast range of beverage types, including tea and hot chocolate, so there are drinks for everybody.
The Difference of Keurig 2.0 K200 Vs K250
If you put Keurig K200 and Keurig K250 side by side, you will be hard-pressed to find a difference. Even their features and specs are similar. In fact, these are the same coffee machines.
So, why does the company sell the same products with different names? Well, this is to differentiate their bundles. Keurig K200 and Keurig K250 come with different items.
Keurig K200 only comes with 1 charcoal filter for the water reservoir. It doesn’t come with a descaling solution. This is not a big problem because you can easily find a descaling solution in the local store or simply use a mixture of white vinegar and water.
Keurig K250, on the other hand, comes with 2 charcoal filters, so there will be a replacement ready when the used one has worn off. The box also includes a descaling solution, which is a nice addition for the long-term maintenance of the machine.
Keurig 2.0 K200 vs K250 belong to the same series, and they work with the same Keurig beverage pods. One nice thing about these two machines is that they support larger brew sizes for mugs and carafes. So, when you want to make a big pot of coffee for serving several people, these coffee machines will get you covered.
The compatibility includes K-Cup, K-Mug, and K-Carafe beverage pods. In addition, Keurig K200 and Keurig K250 can also work with the reusable My K-Cup filter, which is great if you still want to use ground coffee.
These two models support similar brew sizes, which range from 4-oz to 30-oz. However, the available brew sizes for a particular brewing cycle will depend on the pod type that you use.
- K-Cup pods are available for 4, 6, 8, and 10 oz brew sizes
- K-Mug pods are available for 12, 14, and 16 oz brew sizes
- K-Carafe pods are available for 22, 26, and 30 oz brew sizes
Both Keurig K200 and Keurig K250 are ready to use right out of the box. On each unit, there is a large 2-inch touchscreen display for selecting brew size and brew strength.
There are options for regular brew and strong brew. In the past, when you want to increase the coffee intensity, you need to use less water. Now, with the advanced brew strength control, you can get intense coffee regardless of the brew size – you can brew 10-oz coffee that is stronger than the 6-oz one, for instance. This is really nice.
These machines are compact and space-friendly. Each of them only needs a surface area of 9 x 15 inches and a vertical clearance of 14 inches. These coffee makers can easily fit into most kitchens.
On the front of each unit, there is a removable drip tray. With the drip tray attached, you can use a medium-sized cup just fine. However, in order to fit a larger mug or carafe, you need to detach the drip tray. With the drip tray detached, the maximum cup height is 7 inches.
Of course, Keurig 2.0 K200 vs K250 are equipped with removable water reservoirs. The capacity is 40 oz. This is not the largest in the market, obviously. But this is sufficient for making 4 – 5 cups of coffee per refill. So, it is great for personal use. It can also serve a few people who drink coffee regularly.
When the water level gets too low, the machine will remind you to refill. It will also give a notification when the water filter requires a replacement.
Setup and Operation
The initial setup is really easy. After opening the box and placing the machine in your kitchen, you need to plug the power cord and lift up the handle of the machine. There, you will find a disk which needs to be removed; the disk is meant to protect the unit during shipping.
Next, remove the water reservoir and rinse it. Afterwards, you may install the water filter if necessary (you don’t need it if your tap already has a good filter, or if you only use distilled water). Fill the water tank and place it back into the machine.
Now, you can press the power button to turn on the machine. But, before your first cup of coffee, you need to rinse the internal parts. Put a large mug under the brew head, and run a brewing cycle without adding any coffee in order to purge the internal parts. After the process is finished, the machine will be ready to brew the first cup of coffee.
The operation couldn’t be any simpler. You just lift the handle, insert a Keurig pod, and lower back the handle. The display will then show options for the brew size and brew strength. If you are using a pod of tea or hot chocolate, make sure that you select the setting as well. Once the parameters are all set, just hit the brew button. It takes less than a minute to give you a fresh, tasty cup of the beverage.
Truth to be told, the coffee that Keurig K200 and Keurig K250 produce is not comparable to coffee that is professionally brewed by an experienced barista. However, the coffee taste is still good enough to be enjoyed. It has good intensity and aroma. And there are many types of coffee and non-coffee beverages available in the Keurig pod collection.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Cleaning Keurig K200 and Keurig K250 is a breeze. And you won’t need to do it very often.
The outer surface can be wiped clean easily by using a wet lint-free cloth with a drop of a gentle dish soap. Of course, the drip tray is removable and will need to be cleaned regularly. It slides out easily. Be careful not to spill the content of the drip tray; emptying it before it is completely filled is a wise idea. The drip tray can also be cleaned easily with a wet lint-free cloth and some gentle dish soap.
It is recommended that you descale your Keurig K200 or Keurig K250 coffee machine at least once every six months. Descaling will need to be performed more frequently, about once every three months, if you use the coffee machine a lot. This is important for removing the mineral build-up inside the machine, which may reduce your coffee quality and eventually damage the machine.
Fortunately, the descaling process is very easy and straightforward. The manual provides clear instructions that are easy to follow.
You can use the descaling solution that is included with Keurig K250, which is better than white vinegar because it is odorless. If you choose Keurig K200 and don’t get a descaling solution, you can use a mixture of white vinegar and water in a 50:50 ratio, but you will need to purge the machine a few times to eliminate the odor.
Keurig 2.0 K200 vs K250
In general, Keurig K250 is more recommended. It comes with a better bundle, which includes two water filters and an odorless descaling solution. The performance is great; it is fast, and it can brew coffee with good flavor intensity. It also supports a wide range of brew sizes.
